iSchool Collaborations

We should take better advantage of the fact that we have an iSchool on campus that does a lot of techie stuff. We should try to build relationships so that tech projects, not just traditional library projects, are undertaken in the libraries for capstones, class projects, volunteer opportunities, etc. We should make the libraries the lab for the iSchool even more than we have. The rich collaborations with the iSchool merit more promotion. Perhaps we should line Travis up with the iSchool communications staff and share the things we do.

The Benson/HRDI successes with Texas After violence and Rwanda have a strong iSchool connection. Just one example.

Some areas of collaboration are stronger than others, for instance special collections and archives have a good record of serving as learning labs for preservation and archival enterprise students- see: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/apl/aaa/preservation.html AND http://blogs.lib.utexas.edu/aplhighlights/ .

Suggestions to shore up collaboration: secure joint-funded GRA positions, increase duration of Capstone projects so that students can complete the work (and staff aren't left with the loose ends), and develop and sustain technical tools and work flow so that they are already in place for the students/staff. Finally, for those who already collaborate, incorporate p/r into the scope of any student project so that it's self-generating.

As an aside- I believe that the ISchool has somebody on board right now identifying areas of collaboration on campus. Timing is good for this topic.
