Digitization/Preservation/Access

- We need a plan for digitization and preservation and it should include user access. Why preserve if nobody knows it exists?
- Could be part of Institutional Repository but all digitized materials should be discoverable and not just compartmentalized. For example, if you are searching for books/articles, etc. about Texas architecture, a digitized collection of UT building blue prints should come up in that search.
- We should also create these as distinct collections with an interface and these should all be gathered together in a portal to our digital collections to showcase what is unique about the UT Libraries collections. Other universities do this and then they can get recognized in American Libraries digital collection of the week (or something to that effect).
- Perhaps a group such as the TIS proposal review group could be established to help determine projects to undertake
- Need policies, guidelines and a vision for digitization
- Need to respect the established workflow and not add surprise projects in to the mix without going through the regular process (or there should be some bandwidth set aside for unexpected projects so that the regular workflow doesn’t get disrupted)

if our repository stuff is not disclosed to Google, i mean web browsers, we are missing an opportunity. Somehow I bet they are. Cataloging for the little discovery tool of a campus opac may not be worth the money.

this points to the need for: a real content management system, a true archive for these files, and digital curators. look to our peers as models.
