Bibliographer review of Approval Books needed?

Seems to me there is a lot of staff time and effort involved in the approval plan bibliographer review process. Given our growing acquisition of eBooks, which are not individual reviewed, and our publisher-based approval profile, is this process a good use of staff time? Is there sufficient (any?) benefit to our users for this librarian-oriented process? If so, are there other, less staff-intensive, ways to accomplish the same purpose?

Seems to me it would be fiscally responsible to continue the somewhat labor-intensive sorting process for another year or more, because we have just switched to an entirely new company, YBP, with different personnel, processes and cycles. Bibliographers monitoring this material both online in GOBI and in actual material received have seen much that needs to be tweaked, corrected. The most efficient way to do that (and save the Libraries money in the future by preventing unnecessary receipts) is to SEE the physical object coming in. Since online profiling by every vendor including YBP is highly subjective, it is not enough to see the online profiles to ensure the approval plan is being properly expedited so early in the transition. See The Book! Is the profiling accurate based on content, level, format of the book? Should we have received it?

Review of approval material is necessary. Curriculum needs change and new areas of studies are added (e.g. video game development). The subject specialists are the best people to monitor this as they (theoretically) should be in contact with the faculty and be aware of their needs.
