Replace guards with student and staff

Consider replacing guards with student and staff. Students during regular work hours and staff after 5pm. The average guard cost is $42,603.75 per year for 4 FTE. We pay for not only the guard salary but fringe benefits, vacation, sick leave, longevity, uniform, equipment, and an administrative fee.

So are you volunteering to man the PCL guard desk until 2 a.m. this fall?

Where does this salary data come from? Does it include benefits? Seems high. LibQual data shows students more recently (and somewhat understandably) feel that pcl is not safe. A guard in a uniform would seem to provide a perception of greater safety than students sitting in front of a pile of magazines at the safety gate -- whatever the reality and effectiveness of our actual guards. Also, students, even more than guards, cannot confront fellow students or especially faculty/visitor types in any way if there is a problem. It would save money to put a cardboard cutout of a guard at the gate too, but doesn't mean it's a particularly good idea. Sorry, don't support this one for this building.
