A cost-benefit analysis of TDL is in order.

If we need to cut and trim, the Texas Digital Library is something from which we derive little benefit. Yet it costs a lot in terms of staff and fees. Online theses and dissertations are important, but those are being served up by UT’s own repository, which operates independently of TDL. A cost-benefit analysis of TDL is in order.

Texas Digital Library

We need an IR, do we also need TDL? With money so tight, we need to ensure we are spending what we have to serve our primary constituents (UT-Austin affiliates) rather than the entire state.
- There should be an evaluation plan in place for TDL, if there isn’t one already. Things that aren’t working should be dropped. New projects should be developed to meet a real need, not just because they seem interesting or cool. For example, why are we developing a learning objects repository when there are well-respected national repositories already? Why are we offering blogs and wikis services when these services are available for free or at minimal cost already through companies or open source software?
