Job Sharing

Some employees with young children or older parents to care for may be interested in job sharing where they share their job with another library employee. The two employees can elect to share one full-time job. Job sharing is different than part-time work because the benefits are shared and the employees can continue to grow professionally on a career path. Often part-time workers are given only non-critical jobs to do and this hurts their careers. There are many examples of successful job sharing in companies such as HP and IBM where the two employees continued to job share as they became managers and grew professionally. As the library's budget changes with the economy, job sharing can help us retain employees and their knowledge of the UT libraries while helping the budget grow and shrink as the economy changes. For example, in several years the economy may be stronger (we hope!) and the employees who are job sharing may be ready to return to full-time employment. At that point, the library does not have to train new employees, it can just change the status of the job sharing employees.
