Strengthen inter-library loan

As Staff and Physical collections shrink, enlarge and strengthen inter-library loan (particularly the digital side and buy-on-demand) by shifting staff from traditional public services.

One of our busiest and most productive units is being starved of space and staff even though we are relying on their work for more and more services and more material. Surely space on the first floor or wherever can be reconfigured to provide better work flow for equipment, storage and people, better working conditions and opportunities for growth without big money expenditure?

Buy-on-demand suggestions should be routed to bibliographers for 24/48 hour response and possible rush order/s, instead of wasting inter-library's staff expertise, time and money trying to track down items outside inter-library networks and work-flows. Selecting and purchasing is completely different work flow from inter-library, and bibliographers have the subject knowledge and expertise to determine whether requested items are remotely relevant to campus programs, and they have expertise to properly route requests through acquisitions. This change would also allow bibliographers to track more carefully areas of demand, and would cut back on expenditures for non-programmatic materials.
